Victoria Nolan, ARM, CSP
Victoria's background includes over 25 years of experience in risk management, loss prevention, safety and employee benefits. This has included working closely with human resources on managing ADA compliance and employment liability including claims of harassment and discrimination.
Victoria also understands what it is like to be different. In 2011 Victoria decided that her life wasn't exciting enough so after 21 years in the same organization she became the organization's first transgender employee. This life changing event provided her experience and understanding from both the employer and employee perspective. "It took me months to build up the courage to tell anyone at work that I was going to transition, I was afraid I would lose my job, even though I was familiar with our policies against discrimination! I will never forget the day I finally made the leap." As Victoria goes about her daily life she has also found that she is often the first transgender person that a number of people have ever interacted with. "There can be many preconceived ideas or expected stereotypical behavior, that when people actually meet and interact with someone who is transgender they realize that in reality we are no different than anyone else."
Victoria's experience has included presenting professional development sessions at the local, regional and national level as well as engaging employees and managers in smaller groups and individually. She is an award winning author and is currently working on a book tracking the challenges and her experiences through transition.
